The event evolved into a two day
experiential workshop, which was designed as an artistic research, around the
concept of prosthetic memory. According to the academic Alison Lanchberg, who
defines prosthetic memory in her dissertation ‘’ Prosthetic memory: the ethics and
politics of memory in an age of mass culture’’ , the term refers to the
memories of others, which we take on like prosthetic limbs. To make another's
memory our own, we must go beyond the simple hearing of it, in a story we need
a sensory experience. With this way, Lanchberg supports that empathy and
solidarity can be built between people. During this workshop, our team
approached this idea through a collective artistic endeavour
and co-creation, which focused on the concept of a souvenir, and how it works
as a means of reflection on a personal or collective memory.
re:souvenir, Invitation for an urban walk:
- Stand outside
- Wait there till you see a cat go by.
- Follow the cat till it’s not longer possible
- When the cat is gone to a place you cannot follow, wait there and ask the people passing by : ‘’do you have cats?’’
- Try to keep the conversation going as long as you can
Cats:
