Thessaloniki report 2016-2022
By
watching a live public webcam recording the center of Thessaloniki, I am
observing the constant transformation of public space. I want to witness and
reconstruct an image of the city, not only of my own memories but of a
collective memory that ultimately shapes it.
The ‘’Arch of Galerius’’ widely known as ‘’Kamara’’ is the central point and one of the most important Roman monuments of the city. Even after 1700 years, it remains a symbol and part of daily life. It is used as a meeting point, a place of political and cultural gatherings, a touristic attraction, a drug trafficking area and as ‘’playground’’ for bag-snatchers and lovers alike.
I ask one simple question:
What is the first image that comes to mind
when you think of Thessaloniki?
The answers vary and reveal the respondents'
relations to the city. The hypothesis that ''Kamara'', the Roman triumphal
monument, will prevail as an answer is confirmed and therefore takes the lead
in each composition. However, all answers are included in each artwork for
the creation of a new historicity.
Each
piece is unique and has been made during the 5 years I lived in Thessaloniki.
All documents and videos are from my personal archive.
